This is likely popping up now because of the NYT's interview with Mark Carney, in which he admits that Canada has made plans to counter a U.S. invasion[1].

It has long been known that the U.S. regularly makes plans for invading Canada. They make plans for invading everything. Nobody should be surprised that Canada has made plans to counter. What's interesting is that a sitting Canadian Prime Minister is admitting to doing so in the present tense. That much is new.
Passive voice seems to deploy an umbrella of informed awareness over the hoi polloi. Perhaps in this thread today, there has been at least one of The Lucky 10,000.
When I personally hear the words "The U.S. is perpetually making plans to invade... " my mind inserts the word "Cuba" as a C-word. Cuba is the one we're supposed to invade any day now, I thought! "Take This Bus To Cuba" is the Monty Python hijacker's line. The hijackers went to Cuba in the 1970s. All the college kids wear Che Guevara tee shirts.
In my mind, Canada is the land of friendly uncontrolled border crossings, with wacky cats who don't need passports, and Yanks on day-trips, shopping in Canuck pharmacies for discounted drugs, like that lady in Love and Other Drugs. NORAD protects Canada--how could NORAD or Cheyenne Mountain invade Canada?! William Shatner, Tom Brokaw, and Stargate SG-1 invaded the United States!! That's the hoi polloi being informed from the entertainment industry about North America!
Furthermore, attributing these plans to "The U.S." while the popular opinion is that the Republicans/neo-cons/MAGA are exclusively laying those alleged plans, because the Republicans/neo-cons/MAGA have said things rather openly.
Incorrect title since the link is only about the War of 1812. There were several other invasions of what became Canada, such as 1775, the Fenians, and the Pig War.
