I code by hand (sigh) and copy paste some snippets once in a while from a web chat LLM. This also means every single line of such snippets gets reviewed and anaylzed. Usually, these are some arcane Win32 API usage where otherwise I'd have to dig into old forums. I don't want to become a prompt engineer so I stay away from "agentic" workflows.

You're missing out, for better or worse.

As an engineer, the enjoyment from the process is not less important, or should I say more important, than the enjoyment from shipping a final product.

That's probably the single thing that I found to be biggest difference between those who are very pro AI vs. those more reserved or negative.

A colleague has openly stated that he very much does not care for the process, he just want the product. Where I only care about the product in the sense that I have to, because it's my job and for hobbies I pretty much only care about the process. So an LLM pretty much doesn't make sense, because it help by removing the part I care about. They are good tools for debugging and if you're hopelessly stuck on a detail of some weird and obscure API or configuration.


As an engineer, I know what I'm getting paid to deliver is the work product. I don't have too much attachment to any particular set of tools to get there.

If we follow that logic, I believe it means that you would be quite happy in the Product Owner role, or in the role of a client who outsources the actual development activities. I wouldn't.

Yes, engineer experience/happiness is part of the equation. The company also thinks that agentic workflow will clutter the codebase.

Also, those "smart" TVs aren't really smart, besides that data grabbing, and are really slow. So connecting some mini PC is the way to go.

Citizenship, while usually a circumstance of birth, comes with a a shared responsibility of the society one is a citizen of. That responsibility also goes the other way, where the society has a duty to look out for the citizen

While it sucks that people from other societies dont feel like those societies are good for them, it doesnt mean that citizens of the host society should extend that responsibility to people who do not share responsibility for that society like citizens do.

Essentially these foreign workers are mercenaries, and do not derserve the same loyalty and protections that citizens do

Another reason is that the responsibilities between citizen and society are fulfilled on a long timescale. A society will educate you, and then you need to contribute to the economy in that society to pay it back so to speak. Technological innovation, military service, rasing future citizens. Any of these things can only happen on a long timescale so quickly switching citizenship doesnt allow that contract to be fulfilled

As for definition: First, nobody here is necessarily using the word by some specific definition invented at a particular time, but rather in the colloquial sense of being a member of a country; and second, even if they were restricting the sense of the word to the one you are referring to, recency (if that's what you're implying by "18th century"...?) does not imply some kind of triviality.

Even removing legal barriers, it can't be as easy, since changing citizenships necessitates a very large geographical move, while changing jobs may a require a large move, a small move, or no move. Changing countries changes your entire life - you are leaving your home, its culture, and everybody you know there. It's cruel to imply the people who would be made miserable by such changes simply don't matter.


The point is to eliminate the birth lottery - so if you happen to be born in a bad place, moving to a better place should be just a matter of your wish.

Not taking a position on either side of the underlying debate, but obviously a government has a unique obligation to its own citizens, and ideally no unique obligation to an ethnicity or race.

A country's first responsibility should be to its citizens.

Maybe in one thousand years we will all be one joint geo-political entity, which will be great, but until then it is an unassailable fact of physical reality that nations must prioritize their own citizens. That doesn't mean ignoring everybody else - just prioritizing.

Nonsense. There is no lottery, children are born of their parents 100% of the time. Those children have a right to what their parents built, and a duty to leave it better than they found it for their children, and that includes their nations.

Until very recently, that was a pretty common view. Countries generally want unconstrained exports, while limiting competitive imports.

That might be true in practice but also 1) completely incompatible with global notions of fairness and justice, and 2) not an especially compelling political argument for getting countries to open up their markets.

(2) There’s very few sustainable global competitive advantages. Sometimes you might have a better natural resource by virtue of geography and getting in first to “own“ it. But for most businesses, reducing trade barriers really just introduces more competition.


That's a great ideal, but is obviously impossible to the extent that you are implying, until we can eliminate national and legal borders entirely, which is a distant-future goal. You're putting the horse lightyears before the cart.

While the language is interesting, sadly, nobody is using it in the wild. Maybe due to cumbersome deployment options? The ability to produce native standalone executables would boost its usage I believe.


It is not due to deployment options. People put all sorts of stuff in docker containers every day. It is rather that few people make an effort to learn a lisp, and fewer still who choose to learn Racket. The few universities teaching good computer programming basics using Racket don't really make a dent. You simply don't have coworkers who know this stuff. Are you going to be the one person making a decision at the company, to use something no one but you knows? Not gonna happen.

I have not had a single coworker, who has even started to learn these things, even after I have presented a Scheme on a Friday afternoon, and showed off some cool threading/pipeline syntax-rules macro, and showed how this compared to Python, showing how it reduces boilerplate in a way impossible to do in Python.

Granted, this is in Germany, where CS education is not really all that great, and most universities teach boring Java or C++ or something.

At least we had a RacketCon in Berlin some time ago, and I was fortunate enough to have a prof at university, who at least introduced Dr.Scheme. His motto was: "I am not here to teach you C, Java, or Python. I am here to teach you computer programming." (translated) He went on to introduce languages of various paradigms, from Prolog, to Dr.Scheme (predecessor of Racket), to C, and Python. Thank you Prof. von Löwis.

I agree. In 2020 we had to manipulate some Moodle files. I wrote the code in Racket and I sent the ".exe" file to my coworkers, that never knew they were using Racket.

Guix-HPC started as a joint software development project involving three research institutes: Inria, the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC), and the Utrecht Bioinformatics Center (UBC). Not only do I produce standalone executables in Racket, I cross-compile GUI apps written on MacOS to produce executables for Windows.


I wrote my own AI coding harness in Racket, it works fine, meets my own needs. I did earlier versions in Common Lisp and Python but the Racket version is the most full featured.


Given that a lot of people use it in the wild I’m not sure where you’re getting that from.

Naughty Dog was a great example of how productive Scheme can be in the hands of a few expert programmers. Founders attended MIT and CMU.

The OpenGOAL project is a project to reverse engineer the Jak and Daxter video games and the custom programming language they were developed in: GOAL.

The long-term objective of the project is to make Jak and Daxter run natively on a PC by decompiling and recompiling it with OpenGOAL, our reverse engineered version of GOAL for x86-64 PCs. We do not host any game assets or copyrighted material from the game – we only host tools for reverse engineering and porting the game. The user must provide a copy of the game to use our tools.


We use it - specifically we use its Scribble package to define self-documented file formats that autogenerate C++ & Python sources.


I wish Lazarus had support for C++ as well. Pascal/Ada's English prose syntax is a deal breaker.


Pascal Syntax is horrible for programming. It's verbose and confining.

Cross platform support exists but works by having Windows as the main development environment than then cross compiling into the varios platforms.

No, I'm talking about C++Builder specifically. They made it sub-par to Delphi.


It has always been sub-par to Delphi, e.g. VCL, FireMonkey and COM interop are all done in Delphi, probably they got tired to do OWL and TV twice in both languages previously.

Yet it still manages to be better than Visual C++, in the Visual part, if we exclude the short lived C++/CX.

I was only thinking about Delphi in regards to the cross-platform, maybe after they end up rebooting the whole compiler on top of clang it gets better.

Or who knows, as Embarcadero is today, maybe they won't bother to improve that, not many corps care about C++ Builder.


Or just replace all of the apps? Why would a user use apps if everything (eventually) can be achieved with an AI?


i think the main blocker to this are the owners of the App Stores themselves. Apple won't let this happen if it can help it.
