Yes— they spy on every pic and text upload. They literally are big brother.

I uploaded a picture to Google Maps once. They told me they needed to access my photos to be able to upload the picture.

A week later I get a notification “hey do you want to upload this photograph of a restaurant you took at location x?”. So Google Maps was busy rifling through my photos while I was going about my day-to-day business.

Creepy, gross and repulsive.

GrapheneOS has storage scopes which make the app think it has full folder/file access but in reality you can choose the exact files or folders to give access. It helps keep invasive apps in line.

So does iOS. That's why this caught me by surprise. Does Android not have this built in?

On iOS, it tells the app you only gave it limited access, and that causes some apps to badger you for full access or refuse to work without full access.

On iOS, there's the picker for access. It doesnt trick the app into thinking it has full access. All apps should just be forced to use the private picker style which is convenient and private.

This feature is to make privacy-invasive apps, that want to snoop and degrade functionality if they don't, behave.

Yes, they scan your photos and text and look for reasons to report you to a government agency. They can completely misinterpret or fabricate what you have with no real controls other than good faith.

For somethings I think they are legally obligated to do this. It is creepy.

You mean mortars ?

Does anyone know why we write code anymore? Why not pass through to an llm that generates the page on the fly (ssr)?

Is it cost ?

Yes: cost, speed, and reliability.

But all of those things are improving at shocking speeds, so I think we’re on a path where code is losing value quickly.

Yeah, I agree. It will be like serverless but for code : codeless.

It’s a disconcerting future.

Why disconcerting?

Seems like the reshaping of an industry and is disconcerting for those of us who work in it.

Just post to the database then asynch send to message queue. Messages should still be idempotent by the consumer but at least this follows rest and is transactional.

It’s simple and easy to follow. At scale use multi tenancy.

Every time I send a work email I leak my pii. We should all use government issued uuids on linked in / facebook.

Small business owner in the U.S. ?

Not OP but I fit into this category (Small Business owner in the US).

Yes, I’m in the US but I somehow doubt my single person LLC is going to qualify for access to these cutting edge models. And frankly, that’s bullshit.

This will only serve to further entrench the big players and the only way to get access to these models will be to already be successful or bribery. That’s a pretty bleak future.

One thing I’ve thought (and said often) throughout my career (and even before “my career” started in High School) was that if I can see something being done at another company (some product feature, cool concept, etc) I will be able to replicate it. Yes large companies have more people but they are just people, if they could do it, so could I (given time/energy).

This is the first time I’ve felt that start to waver. Yes, I was always limited by being 1 person, but I always felt there was a path available to success. I might not have access to supercomputers but I could bootstrap and get by on lower powered hardware as I scaled up.

LLM’s themselves even felt in range if it was something I was interested in pursuing (on a _much_ smaller scale of course).

Essentially, I had the same tools (frameworks, libraries, languages) at my disposal as the big companies. Now that’s changing and I really don’t like that the scale is going be tilted even further into the entrenched company’s favor.

Yeah, I agree completely. This is very worrisome and is creating a multi class system.

The capitalist free market in the United States is a lie.

Regulatory capture now ensures that billionaires and trillion-dollar corporations can put you out of business and sell whatever remains for parts.

If they don't decide to squash you, you're just lucky.

I wonder why the U.S. is only interested in protecting its car industry and not others.

Because of lobbying. That's usually the answer when policies don't make sense

Both oil and gas lobbying against BEV and USA auto manufacturers who outsource or offshore all their parts already.

USA auto makers can’t compete at China Ev (subsidized?) pricing and probably quality.

Yeah, not many industries can compete but I don’t understand the fixation on only preserving auto.

It still has a car industry. Not the best nor the worst choices and some are even made in the us I think. Some in Canada/Mexico at least at the moment.

I agree with this, and it really exposes how two faced and scandalous these companies are.

They all love green energy, but will they use that for their data centers in your backyard?

Rules for the and not for me !

I’m not against data centers, but they need to come with their own clean power supply, and export minimal pollution to its neighbors .

If you can’t provide that it’s not worth the downsides for the community.

Small power plants are less efficient and more polluting than larger ones. They are also harder to inspect and certify on a regular schedule. A single 1GW power facility in your county is much better than 10000 small power plants, one for each business.

True, centralized power generation using a grid that can carry that load would be the best solution. But in absence of that, the alternatives only seem to be between inefficient decentralized green and inefficient decentralized non-green solutions. In that case, I'd opt for the green ones. (Or of course: no datacenter at all)

Even for wind or solar ?

LOL. You’d need thousands of acres of solar panels to provide power for a single data center. Of course the exact area needed depends on what part of the world you’re in, but are you going to put up with 4 square miles of solar panels in your city? That’s a square two miles on a side, or 3.4km×3.4km. Or are you going to let them install hundreds of wind turbines in your neighborhood?

Yes. Don’t build the data center unless you can support that. What’s so strange about it?

Do you think ai usage will decrease due to this change ?

Yes. I've seen the AI usage patterns from people at the top of these kind of leaderboards, they understand that they are not doing things that they expect to produce commensurate value. At best they've inferred (sometimes correctly!) that the existence of the leaderboard means leadership has decided it's OK to burn prodigous amounts of token on any experimental thing one can imagine that might be useful.

> Do you think ai usage will decrease due to this change ?

Frivolous usage sure, internally at Amazon there is a subculture (if you can call it that) of award chasers. Using Kiro for mundane task to burn tokens does not sound that far-fetched.

Overall usage though no I don't think so, these tools have some pretty wide adoption at this point and not by people chasing awards.
